Collect Info To Draft Your Will Online

Whether you decide to prepare your Will online or to to use an attorney, you need to do some preparation to gather the relevant information. It might seem like a lot of work at the beginning but the time you invest will be worth it because the information you collected will be useful for other purposes, like helping your family to track your assets when you have passed on.

Okay, while I think it is important to make a list of your executors and their alternate executors first, I found that many people get stuck at this stage. The same thing happened to me and I feel many people procrastinate on writing their will because it feels like so much work.

Like almost everyone, I hated to do all this filing stuff but what worked for me was this. I suggest you create a list of:

  • of beneficiaries and alternative beneficiaries, in case your first level beneficiaries dies before you
  • rough inventory of my assets. If you plan to leave everything to one or a few person, you can skip this
  • your first and second choice guardian if you have young children
  • your first and second choices for executor. If you can’t decide, list a few people than select from the short list. You want them to act together
  • contact information for people you name as guardian or executor
  • location and account numbers of any accounts you want used to pay debts, expenses, and taxes. You can choose not to select any account and just allow the executor to decide where to get the money

The information you have collected can be used in your estate directory to help your executor track your assets when you are not around. It becomes useful when you want to update your will in the future so the effort you put in to list things down is not wasted.

By having this prepared, to draft your Will online is practically half done since the most difficult part is gathering the above information.
